Can I do couples therapy with someone I’m not in a romantic relationship with?

The answer is ABSOLUTELY!

“Couples therapy” is really just relationship therapy. You can go to therapy with anyone in your life you have a significant relationship with- a best friend, a family member, or even a colleague or co-worker you need to have a good working relationship with.

Relationship therapy is simply about getting curious about and healing our connections with others, whether they’re romantic connections or not. We look at conflict style, communication skills, core beliefs, needs, and love languages, and help people connect in ways that feel safe, secure, and mutually beneficial.

A therapist can help you and a friend work through conflict, grieve a loss together, improve communication or conflict skills, or help you through big life transitions. Any type of relationship can benefit from being explored in therapy!

Relationship therapy outside of a romantic context looks much the same as couples therapy in that we’re focused on the relationship. The therapist will help you explore your connection, what brought you together, what you both get out of the relationship, what needs are being met, what challenges you face together, and what you like to see happen in your relationship as a result of counseling.

Relationship therapy can help! Reach out to one of our therapists for a free consultation call to discuss how we can support you improving any of your relationships!
