What is Telehealth Therapy?

Telehealth Therapy

Many therapists and counselors offer telehealth mental health services to expand their reach. It is a way to serve underserved areas while also offering a more confidential and convenient option for psychotherapy sessions. Telehealth is also often more affordable and allows people with mobility or transportation issues to receive mental health care. Here we look at Telehealth therapy, how it works, and the benefits it offers.

What Services Does Telehealth Therapy Include?

Telehealth is the same as in-person sessions held over the phone or by video conferencing. As a result, it provides the same services, including:

●        Therapy for Adults

●        Relationship Therapy

●        Family Therapy

●        Teen Therapy

●        Substance Use Therapy

●        EMDR Therapy

●        LGBTQIA+ Therapy

●        Sex Therapy

What is the Difference Between Video & Phone Therapy?

Both video and phone therapy are considered forms of telehealth therapy. Video therapy is held via video conferencing platforms and allows for face-to-face interaction. This works well if you have the required equipment and also helps build rapport. Telephone counseling is via telephone and is very effective, especially for those who do not have access to proper equipment. People who prefer to remain anonymous also prefer the telephone.

What are the Benefits of Telehealth Counseling?

There are many benefits to telehealth therapy, including:

  • Schedule-Friendly: Instead of having to set aside time to leave work or find childcare, you can have your sessions anywhere. As a result, it is far more schedule friendly for busy people.

  • Easier Access: Regardless of your location, you can access mental health services with a qualified therapist. You don’t have to arrange for transportation and instead hold your sessions from the comfort of your home or the location of your choice.

  • Care Continuity: If you move to a different location, you don’t have to worry about finding a new therapist, even if you move across the country. This provides a better level of care with continuity with the same therapist, so progress is not interrupted.

  • Confidentiality: Some patients are uncomfortable with the idea of being seen entering a therapist’s office or bumping into someone they know in the waiting room. Telehealth therapy offers confidentiality from the privacy of your own home.

How is Telehealth Therapy Conducted?

To book telehealth therapy sessions via video, you will need the following:

  • Computer or tablet

  • Microphone and camera

  • Internet connection with a speed of at least 1 megabit per second (mbps)

  • A private space free of distractions

  • A secure internet connection, preferably not public Wi-Fi

  • Firefox or Chrome as your browser

For phone therapy, you will also need a private space, as well as a phone that is comfortable to use. Using some form of headphones can keep your conversations private while allowing you to put your phone down. A speaker phone is not recommended due to privacy issues.

Private Sessions

As with all therapy sessions, privacy and confidentiality are always a top priority. Your therapist conducts sessions from a private space where there are no disruptions, and confidentiality is guaranteed. Just like office sessions, the time is yours and is only between yourself and your therapist, unless in an agreed-upon group session or when you invite someone to join. Also, your first session requires ID with a photo.

Telehealth therapy sessions are subject to the same fees and insurance coverage, although in some cases, it is more affordable. You can discuss fees with your therapist prior to your appointment to ensure you understand their fee structure or billing practices. In most cases, you will be asked to pay with a credit card prior to your appointment.
